Barbara had brought plastic wine glasses. I think she had them left from one of her wine tasting parties. Anyway, I had a permanent marking pen, and I wrote everybody's name on the base of their glass. So when it came time to make the toast, everybody actually had a glass.
Dieter made a little speech about how proud we feel of our mother, and how much we love her. Then Barbara and I told a couple of stories about how goofy she is. And then we all drank our wine. I'm standing just to the left of the picture. Barbara is beside me over there. Beverley is in the red shirt. Beside Beverley is Cheryl, the teen who was here to help. Courtney is beside her, then Lauren, then Dana, then Bruce or Mike (I can't tell which) Alexa and of course Aidan who is running toward somebody on the far side of the room. And Mother.
Dieter must have done okay with his speech. This looks like applause.
In this photo are Aidan's other grandmommy, Diana Hall, and again my
red headed sister.
Much much later, it was time for the cake.
I paid in three figures for this cake, and Leni says it would cost 60
marks in Germany - about $35. So next time, I'm having it made in Germany.
Well, I had it made at the Old World Bakery, and the woman had a Bavarian
accent, but I guess that wasn't close enough.
Mother seemed really happy to get a wish. There was some discussion
about what it should be.
And the candle was defeated.
I was, at that precise moment, engaged in dropping the largest frosting
rose on the floor.
I stepped on it just a moment later.
Opening the presents is always Mother's favorite part. We started with
flowers, and worked our way up.
Barbara and I gave her a cruise around the Alaskan glaciers. She and
Barbara will leave at the end of June.
